Internships

The UCSF Women's Health Resource Center is always looking for individuals who are interested in an internship with our program.

Interns work closely with Resource Center staff on all aspects of program operation. They assist in all daily activities of the Center as well as work on individual projects tailored to the needs of the Center and the interests of the individual intern.

Interns will gain hands-on experience delivering women's health education. They will also learn all aspects of program administration and operation, become familiar with other Bay Area agencies that serve women, and have the opportunity to increase their content knowledge about women's health.

Skills/ Qualities we look for in an intern:

Interns should have the ability to handle multiple tasks at once while interacting with diverse population groups. An interest in women's health is essential as is comfort with working in a fast-paced environment. Some computer work may be required. Bilingual applicants are a plus.

Examples of intern projects:

A large part of the intern's time will be spent working directly with the women who use the Resource Center's programs and services. Interns will:

• Assess women's educational interests and needs and direct them to the appropriate materials, classes, or resources.
• Provide women with information about classes; discuss class schedules, course options, and content; and enroll women in classes.
• Teach women how to operate breast-pumps.
• Triage women's health questions to the appropriate referral source.
• Provide community resource information.
• Conduct background research about women's health topics to answer specific client questions.
• Inform clients about women's health events and research opportunities.

Interns will also have the opportunity to develop an independent project individualized to the learning objectives of the intern and the needs of the Resource Center. Examples of past projects include:

• Developing the curriculum for a class on Eating & Body Image
• Designing a resource guide for women with urinary incontinence
• Compiling a list of complimentary medicine resources in the Bay Area
• Assisting in the planning of a women's health conference
• Researching literature on women and menopause
